December Election – Beware Door Knockers and Date Changes!
With news of a General Election just before Christmas, things are going to be busier than ever in December. Parents of primary aged children will need to arrange cover for school closures on the 13th and the front door will be inundated with political leaflets and parties on the campaign trail.
But does the person knocking really want to secure your vote? Or are they a thief, taking advantage of the busy period to distract you while an accomplice gets in and grabs valuables? Essex Police have issued some advice about dealing with door knockers…
Help prevent your loved one becoming a victim of distraction burglary by ensuring they know these three tips…

It’s not just the elderly or vulnerable that need to keep their guard up. Anyone can be taken in by a burglar that knows his stuff!
Most of us are nice and want to be polite so can easily be kept on the step for longer than we planned. Long enough for someone else to slip round the back and pinch a laptop, mobile phone, or worse – a handbag containing keys, personal items and ID documents.
Knock knock, who’s there?
Of course it’s easy to think we just won’t open the door but what about the annoyance of people that don’t take the hint? It’s hard to carry on with your day when someone has their finger stuck on your doorbell! Or what if someone takes it as a sign that no-one’s home and tries to break in while you’re actually there?!
That’s where door entry systems come in. We’ve all seen intercoms on blocks of flats that keep the main door closed until someone inside answers their buzzer and presses a button. Well, they’re not just for blocks of flats or offices! You can have them on houses and bungalows too.
For elderly people or those with mobility issues they’re a convenience as well as a safety item. No more struggling to the door only to find a politician with the wrong colour rosette! An access control system goes one better than a camera doorbell. As well as seeing who’s at the door you can easily let people in when you want to.
Door knockers begone!
Family, friends and carers can be let in at the touch of a button. So you don’t need to store keys outside and no-one has to remember codes or sequences. Everyone else can be told “Not today, thank you!” and leave you in peace! You don’t even have to leave your chair…
For a more modern solution you can have a video door entry system to see as well as hear your visitors. Very handy for checking ID before letting the gasman or plumber in for his appointment!
