29 Burglaries Over 9 Days! How a Door Entry System Can Keep You Safe
Nearly 30 elderly people were recently targeted by robbers on their doorsteps over the course of just 9 days. Although some had door chains, they weren’t enough to keep the burglars out. Here’s how a door entry system would have helped…
The offences all happened between 6pm and 9pm. The men involved knocked on the door wearing a hi-vis jacket, claiming to be from the police or council. Once the door was unlocked they kicked it in and gained entry to look for cash, jewellery and other valuables.
They also threatened the victims, all aged over 70 and some in their 80s, with a brick and a substance they made out to be acid in a spray bottle. One of the male victims was sprayed in the face and an elderly lady suffered a suspected heart attack.
How a door entry system keeps the elderly safe
Access control, or door entry, can be fitted to individual houses as well as blocks of flats. The strong lock on the door is not released until the resident is absolutely sure who is knocking. Friends and family can use a code when visiting and save the resident getting up to let them in.
The internal buzzer and door release can be placed in a convenient spot. This makes it easier to answer visitors without struggling to the door. The perfect solution for aged relatives that relish their independence!
It’s convenient and minimises the risk of trips and falls, as well as keeping the bad guys locked out. A buzzer is also easier to use than keys for people with impaired mobility in the hands and wrists.
Door entry systems can be audio, where you can talk to the visitors before deciding to let them in, or video/audio. The benefit of a video/audio system is you can ask to see ID cards and, if in any doubt, call the company to check that they’ve sent someone.
Anyone that’s pretending to be someone they’re not will soon make their excuses and leave!
Door entry systems, don’t give burglars an inch!
The Police have arrested and charged 4 men with the offences above. But in a short time, these criminals caused terrible trauma to 29 people at a time in life they are most vulnerable. The way they gained entry goes to prove that burglars only need a door open an inch to grab their chance.
A quality door entry system means they’re not given that inch. Not given the chance to push or kick through into a private home. And not given the chance to traumatise another elderly victim.
